Researchers discover New Tiny relative of Tyrannosaurus Rex


Sterling Nesbit discovered the fossils of a close relative to Tyrannosaurus Rex. He made this discovery at the age of 16 in 1998.

There were remains found before that particular event which were partial but what Nesbit found had a more detailed structure of the prehistoric creature.

The new species has been named Suskityrannus hazelae.

Nesbit is currently working as the assistant professor at the Virginia Tech College of Science.in the Department of Geosciences

What continent did T-Rex live?


The fossil has been dated back to the Cretaceous period. According to the researchers, the dinosaur roamed the planet Earth about 92 million years ago.

It is believed that the Suskityrannus hazelae was not the oldest of the tyrannosauroid theropod but an intermediate between the smallest and oldest tyrannosauroids and the last of the line huge Tyrannosaurus Rex.

We are familiar with the Tyrannosaurus Rex which disappeared obviously after the mass extinction event 66 million years ago.

Compared to Tyrannosaurus Rex its close relative, the Suskityrannus hazelae was very small, estimated to be 3 feet in height and 9 feet in total length it would have weighed approximately from about 45 to 90 pounds.

The T-Rex was 15 to 20 feet high and 40 feet long. It weighed approximately 7 to 9 tons. To think that something that big as a result of the evolution of its smaller version the Suskityrannus hazelae.

It is believed that like the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Suskityrannus hazelae was also a strict carnivore. The fossil dictates that they already had tyrannosaurid bauplan which is seen on dinosaurs which are designed to run.

The first time any specimen was found was in 1997 by Robert Denton. This was also found in Mexico indicating that they lived mostly in Northern America.

Although Nesbit found the fossil in 1998, it was not known that they belonged to the T-Rex family until recently.

As the progress in the field increased and other cousins of the Tyrannosaurus Rex were found in Asia and other parts of the world, research was done on this specimen and it was concluded that this was also a part of the T-Rex family.

Nesbit found these remains when he was part of a digging expedition during high school.

The team was taken to New Mexico by Doug Wolfe, who was at that time an author of the newspaper.

Nesbit credits this discovery as the milestone in his life as it acted as a catalyst and spiked up his interest in paleontology and from this point on helped him mold his career.

Can a T-Rex not see you if you don’t move?


As the iconic scene in the movie, the Jurassic Park, where the Tyrannosaurus Rex was not able to see the people until or unless they create any movement, brings us to the question.

Can the T-Rex not figure out its prey if it’s not moving?

To answer the question, let us see the facts that some researchers have accumulated throughout the years.

It is estimated that the Tyrannosaurus had a vision far better than us with visual clarity being 13 times more than a normal human.

Aside from that, he has its eyes located at the front of a slender skull which implies that the front view for him would be pretty clear.

With the acute sense of smell that it has, it would be very difficult to create camouflage to save yourself from him.

So, yes a T-Rex can see you if you don’t move. Actually 13 times better than you do yourself.


What continent did T-Rex live?


Mainly the fossils indicate that the Tyrannosaurus Rex might have lived only in North America.

Recent studies have indicated that the Tyrannosaurus might have lived all over the world.

The recent discoveries of fossils all around the globe are proof that they once roamed almost everywhere in the world.

Evidence suggests that they were in Asia, Africa, and very recent findings place them also in Australia.

It must be noted that Earth had once a large single landmass which also supports that they can be present in various continents.

But mainly the majority of the fossils are found in North America, it can be said here vaguely that they lived in North America
.

Was the T-Rex the strongest dinosaur-


In a way, yes it can be said that T-Rex was the strongest dinosaur.

With three dimensional models and modern science, it is known that the T-Rex could exert the bite force 3 times that of a great white shark.

This makes the T-Rex the strongest dinosaur.

The most dangerous however is considered the Spinosaurus aegyptiacus.

It was bigger and faster than the Tyrannosaurus and could swim.


Did T-Rex used its arms


This has always been a very interesting topic about the Tyrannosaurus Rex as what use would be such small arms as depicted in many documentaries and movies.

Many scientists have suggested that they could be a little larger than originally anticipated.

The use of those arms is not clearly known.

Many speculate that those could have been useful during their early days when the T-Rex is small and as they grow, the use of those arms also subsides.

There is also a chance that they used them to hold the prey at one point. However, none of the statements regarding the matter have been proved.

Did T-Rex lay eggs?

The closest relative to Tyrannosaurus Rex today are the birds

 And as we are all aware, birds lay eggs.

 Another close relative alive is the crocodile, which also lays eggs.

This comparison is important because we have not been able to find any eggs which connect to Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Simply stating, anything related to this topic is based upon our knowledge of the T-Rex’s body functions.

It was always assumed that the Tyrannosaurus Rex reproduced by laying eggs but recently when a fossil was found in Montana with medullary bone developed in it, the chances of this being true skyrocketed.

The medullary bone develops when a bird is ready to lay eggs and it acts as additional calcium helping in creating the shells of the eggs.

With the discovery of this specific feature present in the Tyrannosaurus Rex, it proves that they laid eggs.
